Our Story

X-Ray Cassette Repair Company, Inc., d.b.a. Reina Imaging was founded in 1978 by Founder/Chairman Leo Reina R.T. R. With his years of experience working as both a radiographer and serving as department manager for six years at Lee Memorial Hospital, he saw potential for a niche within the general radiographic market. With a mix of quality workmanship and personal service, Leo grew his reputation based mostly on word-of-mouth sales. The result was fast-paced growth — creating a foundation for the value-added products offered by the company.
 
Today, under the leadership of President Tony Reina, Reina Imaging excels as a radiographic accessory manufacturing firm operating globally. Dedicated to perfecting both form and function for all Reina Imaging products, Reina Imaging serves the medical, veterinary, and non-destructive testing (NDT) radiology industries. Reina Imaging manufactures all products in the US using ISO13485:2016 based quality systems. 
 
While radiography is an enormous industry, Reina remains committed to being a friendly, small family business that is always there for our customers and their patients.

Our History

  • 1978

    X-Ray Cassette Repair Co. Inc. (XRCRC) had humble beginnings. Like many immigrants, Leo Reina came from Sicily with a dream. With his experience as an x-ray tech, he recognized a niche in the diagnostic imaging industry. Leo applied his grit, determination and clinical knowledge to see his very own American dream come to life. He opened and ran the fledgling business out of his small 1K sq/ft basement in Fox River Grove, Illinois, as a one-man operation repairing film cassettes and ID cameras around the Chicagoland area. Before this time, conventional cassettes were purchased, used, damaged, then replaced like a disposable item. Tons of waste. Leo provided a repair service that saved x-ray departments thousands of dollars every year by keeping cassettes in the field for much longer.

  • 1980

    Before this time, x-ray techs had to use masking tape to secure the grid to the cassette for each portable x-ray. This presented many problems for the RT. The grid, to function properly, must be centered to the x-ray cassette and the tape-on method can easily slip and slide off-center when placed behind a patient, which results in grid cutoff and an unusable radiograph. Taping takes time and effort which reduces the tech’s speed and efficiency. Further, grids are made mostly from lead and aluminum which are both soft metals. That malleability can quickly lead to a damaged grid if and when dropped. There’s no fixing a grid once it’s damaged and has a negative artifact. With the ability to recognize these problems that were felt by x-ray techs around the globe, XRCRC created, designed, and produced the first anti-scatter grid encasement. The Protect-A-GridⓇ grid encasement was born and revolutionized mobile radiography by letting the x-ray tech work at maximum speed and efficiency. This device would go on to be one of the most popular selling items for the company.

  • 1981

    As the repair and grid encasement business rapidly expanded, XRCRC needed to identify the best sources for anti-scatter grids. US grid manufacturing died out in the late 50s and early 60s due to the high cost of lead importation. So Leo began his search for the best grid makers from around the globe. Once relationships were forged, he began importing anti-scatter grids and distributing them via exclusivity contracts throughout the US. Today, Reina Imaging is proud to partner with three of the highest quality grid manufacturers based out of the Netherlands, Japan, and Korea. Later this year, Reina also introduced the first grid cassette with an ID window, speeding up the process of putting patient identification on the x-ray film without having to hand stamp, yet again improving outcomes and efficiencies. Leo’s long hours, hard work, and persistence resulted in the company’s first million dollars in sales.

  • 1984

    As the repair and grid business thrived, some new innovations were just around the corner. Listening to our customers has always been a key component to our success. The result from this active customer listening session was another first of its kind: a screen numbering system. This simple inventory management system improved cassette and screen quality control. A straightforward enhancement that gave radiology managers a grasp on their cassette and screen supply. Later this year, we would obtain our first of many patents on the Protect-A-GridⓇ with Channels grid encasement.

  • 1985

    Another customer concern brought about another solution. When hospitals purchased new cassettes, many times the ID Cameras would no longer properly stamp the film with patient information. The actuator, which opens the ID camera window, would not line up to the cassette. This would cause department downtime that, depending on the facility volume, could be disastrous. We created an ID Camera actuator that was self adjusting and eliminated the concern when new cassettes were introduced to the x-ray department.

  • 1987

    As we inched closer to our ten year anniversary, large, industry-leading manufacturers had begun to take notice of XRCRCs repair services. Eastman Kodak, now known as Carestream Health, was the first to solidify a nationwide contract for XRCRC to handle all their cassette repairs. This would set the stage for Reina Imaging’s close relationship with all the big manufacturers.

  • 1992

    As our popularity and reputation as a reliable repair service rose, XRCRC received the Best Vendor of the Year award from Picker X-Ray Corp. This would be the first of three times this honor would be bestowed on this small-time immigrant business owner.

  • 1993

    This was the first of many location changes: as XRCRC repair business grew, the building requirements grew along with it. We made the short jump one town over to Cary, IL, working out of his newly built home. The company had grown from a one-man operation to ten—two of whom are still with the company to this day.

  • 1994

    XRCRC created and patented another first of its kind: a Mammography cassette cleaning station. Plenty of dust exists and circulates throughout the darkroom, and these particulates can get into the mammo cassette, causing artifacts. This cleaning station ensured that no dust or particulates could be found after the cassettes were cleaned. The primary factor was the clean air being used, which was filtered and blown across the cassette to eliminate any dust and particles. This was the second year we received the Picker Best Vendor of the Year Award.

  • 1995

    This was a pivotal point in XRCRC’s business. We decided to sell via distribution instead of selling and servicing directly to end-users. This would prove to be one of the best decisions Reina Imaging ever made, allowing us to grow both within the US and abroad. This was the third year we received Best Vendor of the Year from Picker X-Ray Corp.

  • 1998

    Continued growth necessitated a larger space yet again. We made our next move to our current location in Crystal Lake, IL, and also started doing business as Reina Imaging. This name change was important to the company, as we had come so very far with an expanded portfolio that was much more than just an x-ray cassette repair service. Another milestone this year was the introduction of the aluminum line of Protect-A-Grid 2 encasements, which were thinner, lighter, and more affordable.

  • 1999

    With our distribution network growing and the analog world on its way out, Reina charged headfirst into the 21st century. We did so via two industry changing debuts. First, there was the 178lpi grid. This high line anti-scatter grid was a first of its kind and was a key component to successful computed radiography exams. Without this high line pair frequency, many systems would have been left with unreadable radiographs due to moire patterns. This was the event that sent Reina Imaging straight to the top and become the largest anti-scatter grid distributor in North America. We also established ourselves as the soon-to-be leaders, within the spine and hips-to-ankle imaging niche, by introducing our line of Trans-Former LLFS grid cabinets.

  • 2000

    Reina Imaging introduced the 1st replacement OEM equipment grid assembly offerings.

  • 2004

    When the market started to transition from CR to DR, XRCRC, dba, Reina Imaging introduced this technology to the underserved markets such as podiatry, orthopedic, chiropractic, and veterinarian. In doing so, a new business was born: Reina Digital Imaging. At its peak, this company employed an IT team of six, a sales team of five, and sold, installed, and serviced CR scanners across the lower 48.

  • 2007

    After building Reina Digital Imaging to gross sales of 17M per year, it was time for Reina Imaging to move on from this side of the business. We sold the division to Viztek, which allowed us to revisit our roots, focusing on the dealer, distribution, and OEM networks. DR was beginning to take off, and it was the perfect time for Reina Imaging to make this change, as a whole new line of protective accessories were just around the corner.

  • 2009

    Reina continued to expand its niche position in diagnostic imaging by adding to our portfolio with the release of our 2 in 1 product, the Stitching Stand with Handles. This was our first of many patient immobilization/positioning aides.

  • 2010

    Reina continued to grow its business with our OEM partners both in the US and Europe. In order to supply at such a large scale and private label, we needed to improve our quality and compliance systems. This was yet another pivotal moment for Reina Imaging as we sought and achieved our very first ISO13485:2003 certification. We were now a certified medical device manufacturer that adhered to globally accepted standards.

  • 2016

    We introduced the first surgical mobile lateral cassette holder, the Mobile Positioning Partner. This mobile lateral DR panel holder was a first of it’s kind that focused on use intra-op and could handle up to 17x51in. long format DR panels without tipping or contaminating the sterile field. The original intent was for spine surgeons but quickly expanded out for use in orthopedics, urgent care and in hospital exam rooms.

  • 2020

    We achieved EU-MDR compliance for the majority of our product catalog.
